XPS 720 on 24/7?

Save some energy - turn the beast off when not using it.  7500 cycles = 1 per day will last you 20.5 years.

Perhaps, but it would only be off about 8 hours out of a 24 hour day. And who knows what the Mobo, HD, Vid Cards, and Power Supply thermal cycles are rated at?

Every machine crash I that I can remember has come at POST, shortly before, or shortly thereafter.

And with with the Intel's speed step thing and monitor power down, I would imagine the 8 hour/day energy savings to be minimal.

We toyed with the idea of letting it go into "suspend" ... but in theory, that would not only power cycle it more often if left unattended during the day (long lunch maybe), but it would be on for a longer time overall . For instance, if we set the power off to 2 hours, it would suspend at midnight instead of a manual power-down at 10pm.

I wonder how the majority of XPS 7XX users power their machines.

I leave mine on all the time.  The only time it's off is when I'm going to be away for a few days but usually it's on all day and all night.  I do restart it every few days to clear out all the windows stuff that builds up though.

PaulTech;

My Beast is on ALL the Time.... except for if I go on a trip... then I power it down.
Mine crunches away at Folding@Home project 24/7.

Have you thought about joining Team XPS yet ?
This is a Stanford U project endorsed by Dell, Google and others.  It is for a great cause, researching to find cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's, Huntignton's, and more.
If interested, see Sticky above in XPS section or PM myself or CHSIsupplier for info.

Mine hasn't shut off since I started in on Folding @ Home about 3 or 4 months ago. It crunches away 24/7 with the CPU at 100% usage. I've never had any issues, and I never noticed a difference in my power bill until I built another dedicated folding rig...that seems to have cost me an extra $8 a month, but it's for a great project and worthy cause.

Personally, I have not seen a big impact on my power costs. The 1K power supply almost never draws 1K, and may draw just a fraction of that when system load is low.

I am sure there has been some increase in the electric bill, but nothing that jumps out at me when taking it out of the envelope. Certainly not $100 or anything like that. Maybe 5 to 10 bucks per month for the extra 8 hours a day.

Then again, I had an 105Watt AMD FX-55 with 2x6800 Ultra cards sitting where this machine sat before it arrived ... so I am probably only seeing the difference in draw between those two machines.

This is actually something I was wondering about too... With a 1Kw Power Supply, does your electricity bill go up a lot?

I turn my machine off ,between the dust that would be pulled into the PC if it was on 24/7 and the wear and tear on the moving parts ,I have always believed in turning your machine off.  Now if you are on you PC 8+ hours a day then perhaps you could make a good argument for leaving it on !   However a fresh re-boot is always good for a PC.   Those who leave their PC on all the time I would recomend you turn iit off once a month to clean the dust bunnies out .  Even my PC that is on only 3-4 hours a day has alot of dust built up after just a couple of months !

With the exception of our servers, we power our equipment off at the days end.

We are trying to do our part to conserve energy.
